Do you need separate contents insurance when moving house? We explain what removal companies cover, what they don't, and when to buy extra insurance.
One of the most common questions before a house move is whether you need extra insurance. The short answer: your removal company has insurance, but it may not cover everything — and the gap can be significant.
**What removal company insurance covers.** All reputable UK removal companies carry goods-in-transit insurance. This covers damage or loss caused by the removal team — items dropped, boxes crushed in the van, or breakage during carrying.
**What it usually doesn't cover.** Most removal company policies have per-item limits (often £50–£100 per item). Antiques, jewellery, artwork and high-value electronics are typically excluded unless declared and separately valued. Items you packed yourself are frequently excluded entirely.
**Ask your removal company three questions.** What is the per-item limit? What is the total claim limit? Does cover extend to items I packed myself? Get the answers in writing before move day.
**Check your home contents insurance.** Many home contents policies include goods-in-transit cover during a house move, either automatically or as an optional add-on. Check your policy documents or call your insurer before buying separate cover.
**When to buy specialist removal insurance.** If you own items worth more than £500 each — jewellery, art, high-end electronics, antiques — consider specialist removal insurance. It is typically available for around 1–2% of the declared value.
